Mill town terraces and a 1960s estate
Heywood grew up around cotton. By 1833 the town had 27 mills. By 1881 it had 67 mills and weaving sheds and close to 5,900 houses. Most of those homes were rows of terraces built for mill workers. Many of them are still lived in today.
The next big wave came in the 1960s. Darnhill was built as an overspill estate for families moving out of Manchester. The first of them arrived in 1963. In ten years the town grew from about 24,000 people to more than 30,000.
These two kinds of home need different things. A terrace that is well over 100 years old was never built with electricity in mind, so all of its wiring was added later, often more than once. A 1960s house was wired when it was built, but that wiring is now around 60 years old. It was sized for far fewer appliances than a family uses today.
