What Are the Signs a House Needs Rewiring?

The clearest signs are in the fuse board and the cables. An old-style board with rewireable fuses rather than modern breakers, cables with rubber, fabric or lead sheathing (often perished and crumbling), sockets that are scorched, warm to the touch, buzzing or simply too few per room, and lights that dim or flicker are all pointers that the wiring is past its best. Round-pin sockets, black rubber cabling and no earth on the lighting circuit usually mean the installation is decades old. If any of these ring true, the sensible step is an inspection before you decide, not a rewire on a hunch.
